Assistant Summer Camp Director
The Assistant Summer Camp Director works alongside the Summer Camp Director to help lead and support all areas of our resident camp. This role contributes to program planning, staff training and supervision, quality and fiscal management, and creating a positive experience for campers and guests. The Assistant Director helps ensure every program is safe, engaging, and connected to our mission and values. This position also supports our environmental education and conference programs, providing safe instruction, thoughtful facility use, and an outstanding experience for every participant.

As a Camp Counselor, you’ll develop skills that set you apart—leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management—while spending your days in a high-energy, hands-on environment. You’ll be a mentor, a motivator, and the reason campers have the best week of their lives. Along the way, you’ll gain experience that employers notice and friends you’ll keep for years.
Before your interview, check your school, travel, and work schedule so we can move the process along quickly. These are residential roles, meaning you’ll live on site—usually in cabins with campers—fully immersed in the camp experience.

Junior Counselor (Under 18)
Your first big step into the camp world starts here! As a Junior Counselor, you’ll work side-by-side with awesome staff, help lead activities, and be the go-to encouragement for campers. You’ll learn new skills, make friends, and be part of the team that keeps camp buzzing all summer.
Counselor
The best summer job? Right here. As a Camp Counselor, you’re not just working—you’re leading games, creating inside jokes, and making memories that last long after campfire season ends. You’ll inspire campers, bond with your team, and spend your summer doing something that actually matters.
Senior Staff
Take your leadership skills to the next level. Senior Staff manage high-responsibility areas like the waterfront, ropes course, or specialty programs, and lead teams as Unit Leaders or Program Directors. These roles build expertise in risk management, team supervision, program planning, and decision-making—experience that translates directly to careers in education, recreation, leadership, and beyond.
Camp Nurse
Be the heartbeat of camp. As our Camp Nurse, you’ll provide compassionate care, manage daily health needs, and respond to emergencies with professionalism and skill. This overnight position requires a current NJ Nursing License and offers a unique chance to blend your medical expertise with the vibrant, community-driven energy of camp life. You’ll be a trusted presence for campers and staff, ensuring everyone stays healthy, safe, and ready for the next adventure.

International Staff
We love welcoming staff from around the world to our camp family! If you live outside the United States and want to work as a Camp Counselor, you’ll need to apply through a designated cultural exchange program like CCUSA or CIEE. These organizations help arrange your J-1 Visa, which allows you to work at camp while experiencing American culture.
You must be at least 18 years old and meet the application requirements of CCUSA or CIEE before we can consider you for a position. Once approved, you’ll join a team of counselors from around the globe, bringing your skills, culture, and energy to create an amazing summer experience.

Outdoor Programs
Group Program Instructor
Part-Time Position with both weekday and weekend availability
Our Group Program Instructors lead activities like hiking, swamp and stream study, boating, archery, songs, survival, and more - but no experience is necessary! We have a great training program that will prepare you to feel confident and lead groups in experiential education. The Group Program Instructor will prepare program areas and instruct participants in all activities assigned. It is essential to ensure the safety of participants, proper use of camp equipment, and proper use of camp facilities. Provide an enjoyable experience to participants.
Our Group Program Instructors are enthusiastic leaders who have a desire to inspire a love and knowledge of the outdoors to both youth and adult participants.

Environmental Education
Environmental Education Instructor
Part-Time Position During Weekdays with Occasional Weekend Availability
The Environmental Educator is responsible for teaching and leading different classes and activities that include: leading outdoor academic classes using a science-based curriculum, team-building, and recreational activities such as boating, archery, orienteering, and campfires. The Environmental Education Instructor will prepare program areas and instruct participants in all classes assigned. It is essential to ensure the safety of participants, proper use of camp equipment, and proper use of camp facilities. Provide an enjoyable experience to participants.
Environmental Educators are creative educators who are enthusiastic and have the desire to teach children and increase their interest and knowledge in the environment.

Internships
Environmental Education Internship - Paid
Environmental Education Interns are creative educators, who are enthusiastic and have a desire to teach children and increase their interest and knowledge in the Environment.
Recreational Program Internship - Paid
Recreational Program Interns are enthusiastic leaders who have a desire to inspire a love and knowledge of the outdoors to both youth and adult participants.
What you should know about the Metro YMCA Internship Program:

The 2025-2026 Internship Program runs during the course of a student's college semester, however, this schedule is flexible based on college schedules. Internship students can be undergraduate or graduate level students.

Intern must be able to work weekday hours as well as some nights and weekends.

Depending on the internship program, housing at the facility may be provided.

This is a paid internship, however, credit can be given when necessary and federal work-study students are welcome to apply.

In addition to the above responsibilities, all interns will be given the opportunity to use the skills they've learned throughout the session to put together an individual presentation and also work on collaborative group projects. The presentation and group project topics will focus on ways to improve processes, products, designs, and programs at the YMCA.

Interns should be students enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program.

Food Service
Kitchen Assistant
The Kitchen Assistant is responsible for assisting the cooks and Food Service Director in the kitchen and dining halls ensuring the kitchen is clean and efficiently operational.

Facilities
Maintenance II Technician
Under the direction of the Sr. Facilities Director, works to ensure an attractive, safe and well-maintained facility by performing repairs and maintenance task related to the overall upkeep of buildings and grounds, including cleans and sanitizes assigned areas, including such duties as mopping, dusting and trash removal.
